Winter E-Bike Storage Tips

Cold weather can have several different effects on e-bike batteries and how well they work … or don’t. With that in mind, here are a few winter tips to you get the most out of your rides.

Condensation Issues
Moving from cold to warm environments can cause condensation to form on electrical components, potentially leading to short circuits or corrosion over time.  Always keep an eye on their bike’s electrical contact points. It’s important to take your bike inside when you finish your ride to the office, and wipe down any signs of moisture.

Reduced Power Output
The power output of the battery can be cut – especially as your bike gets older – in cold weather, which means your e-bike might not accelerate as quickly or have the same top speed as it does in warmer conditions. Getting up steep hills can also suffer, under extreme conditions, too. However, this doesn’t mean the battery or motor is failing, just working against Mother Nature.

Battery Storage Tips

Battery Storage
When storing your e-bike in cold temperatures, it’s important to keep the battery at room temperature to maintain its longevity. If possible, you should store the battery indoors when not in use. Just as the expression goes regarding our beloved pets, “if you’re cold, they’re cold.”

Reduced Battery Performance
Low temperatures can reduce the efficiency of an e-bike’s battery, causing it to discharge more quickly than usual. Riders might notice a decrease in the range of their e-bike during colder months.

Increased Charging Time
Cold weather may also slow down the chemical reactions inside the battery, leading to longer charging times. A quick “top off” charge will take longer, so planning ahead is important. Remember to charge more regularly, if that is your usual habit.

To mitigate these effects. Try to keep the battery warm before using it, avoid exposing the bike to extreme cold for long periods, and charge the battery at room temperature. Whenever possible, bring the entire bike, and not just battery, inside – and if your bike needs to remain outside, definitely consider using a bike cover.

Now’s the time to get your bike cover- it even folds up compactly enough that you can carry it with to your destination, and keep the bike covered everywhere you ride.

Now would be a great time to get your e-bike serviced and ready for spring! Call to schedule an appointment today!
