Frequently Asked Questions

What are the different types of e-bikes?

Class 1: Pedal assist only, up to 20 mph.

Class 2: Pedal assist and throttle assist, up to 20 mph.

Class 3: Throttle assist up to 20 mph, pedal assist up to 28 mph.

To stay within these three classes, an e-bike cannot have more than 750 watts of power.

Local laws may decide where each class of e-bike can be used.

Think about these factors:

  • Where and how you plan to ride, like commuting, trails, or leisure
  • How much do you want to spend
  • The range and power you need
Comfort features include a step-through frame, suspension, or upright riding position.
Trying out different models is the best way to see what works for you.

E-bikes need most of the same maintenance as regular bikes, plus a few extra steps for the electrical parts. You should check tire pressure, lubricate the chain, adjust the brakes, and make sure all bolts are tight.

Since e-bikes are faster and heavier, parts like brake pads, chains, and tires can wear out sooner, so check them often. The motor, battery, and display require minimal maintenance; keep the connections clean and dry, and do not use high-pressure water to clean them.
In most cases, you do not need a driver’s license or insurance to ride an electric bike. If you have a class 1, 2, or 3 e-bike, the rules are usually similar to those for regular bicycles.

However, laws can be different depending on where you live and the type of e-bike you have. Some places have age limits, helmet rules, or restrictions on where you can ride certain e-bikes. Insurance is not usually required, but some people get it for theft or damage, especially for expensive bikes. If your e-bike is more powerful than a class 3, it is not considered a bicycle anymore and will need a license and insurance like a motor vehicle.
